Should DevTools teach the CSS cascade?

Stefan Judis, two days before I mouthed off about using (X, X, X, X) for talking about specificity, has a great blog post not only using that format, but advocating that browser DevTools should show us that value by selectors.

I think that the above additions could help to educate developers about CSS tremendously. The only downside I can think of is that additional information might overwhelm developers, but I would take that risk in favor of more people learning CSS properly.

I’d be for it. The crossed-off UI for the “losing” selectors is attempting to teach this, but without actually teaching it. I wouldn’t be that worried about the information being overwhelming. I think if they are considerate about the design, it can be done tastefully. DevTools is a very information-dense place anyway.

Euismod

An interactive tool for learning grid syntax from Etesam Ansari. In the Learn section, it teaches you some concepts (involving multiple bits of the grid syntax) then gives you a task to complete by filling out the right syntax. I’m sharing because I think this sort of thing really clicks with people — I know Flexbox Froggy did. Once you know the possibility, there is no shame in memorizing all the details, that’s what our guides are for: we have them for flexbox and grid. Generators can be awfully helpful too, like Sarah’s Grid Generator.

Aside: I wonder what Euismod means. Google suggests it is Latin for Performance.

DevTools for CSS layouts 2021 edition

Chen Hui Jing covers some recent movement in DevTools:

Firefox’s grid inspector was pretty full-featured from the get-to and released together with CSS grid in Firefox 52. It was constantly improved upon since. Chrome added a basic grid inspector tool in Chrome 62 that let developers highlight elements using grid layout, but more robust features were only added in Chrome 87. And now, Webkit [sic] has joined the party, as Safari Technology Preview 123 adds Grid inspecting features as well.

You love to see it. DevTools have a massive impact on how front-end developers think about, build, and of course, debug websites. Stuff like seeing the numbered grid lines visually is a huge deal. I’ve done enough mentally counting what rows/columns I want to place things on, thank you very much.

Can I Email…

While I’m 85% certain you’ve seen and used Can I Use…, I bet there is only a 13% chance that you’ve seen and used Can I Email…. It’s the same vibe—detailed support information for web platform features—except instead of support information for web browsers, it is email clients. Campaign Monitor has maintained a guide for a long time as well, but I admit I like the design style pioneered by Can I Use….

HTML email is often joked about in how you have to code for it in such an antiquated way (<table> tags galore!) but that’s perhaps not a fair shake. Kevin Mandeville talked about how he used CSS grid (not kidding) in an email back in 2017:

Our Apple Mail audience at Litmus is approximately 30%, so a good portion of our subscriber base is able to see the grid desktop layout.

Where CSS Grid isn’t supported (and for device/window widths of less than 850 pixels), we fell back to a one-column layout.

Just like websites, right? They don’t have to look the same everywhere, as long as the experience is acceptable everywhere.

Me, I don’t do nearly as as much HTML email work as I do for-web-browsers work, but I do some! For example, the newsletter for CSS-Tricks is an RSS feed that feeds a MailChimp template. The email we send out to announce new shows for ShopTalk is similar. Both of those are pretty simple MailChimp templates that are customized with a bit of CSS.

But the most direct CSSin’ I do with HTML email is the templates for CodePen emails. We have all sorts of them, from totally custom templates, to special templates for The Spark and Challenges and, of course, transactional emails.

Those are all entirely from-scratch email templates. I’s very nice to know what kind of CSS features I can count on using. For example, I was surprised by how well flexbox is supported in email.

It’s always worth thinking about fallbacks. There is nothing stopping you from creating an email that is completely laid out with CSS grid. Some email clients will support it, and some won’t. When it is supported, a fancy layout happens. When it is not supported, assuming you leave the source order intelligible, you just get a column of blocks (which is what most emails are anyway) and should be perfectly workable.

Progressive enhancement is almost more straightforward in email where there is rarely any functionality to be concerned with.

Swipey Image Grids

I hope people think of SVG as a vector format that is good for drawing things. There is plenty more to know, but here’s one more: SVG is good for composition. You draw things at very specific coordinates in SVG and, while they can scale, they tend to stay put. And while SVG is a vector format, you can place raster images onto it. That’s my favorite part of Cassie’s “Swipey image grids” post. The swipey part is cool, but the composition is even cooler.

Eliminating five top compatibility pain points on the web

Robert Nyman and Philip Jägenstedt:

Google is working with other browser vendors and industry partners to fix the top five browser compatibility pain points for web developers. The areas of focus are CSS Flexbox, CSS Grid, position: stickyaspect-ratio, and CSS transforms.

[…] The goal in 2021 is to eliminate browser compatibility problems in five key focus areas so developers can confidently build on them as reliable foundations.

I’d say slow clap, but I don’t want to sound sarcastic. Full on, regular clapping.

Ten, fifteen years ago, the job of a web designer and developer was heavily thinking about, planning for, and dealing with cross-browser compatibility. These days, it’s still a thing, but it’s not about dealing with bugs, quirks, and frustrating implementation differences like it was then. It’s more edge-case stuff with more obvious work-arounds. And when we’re thinking about the browser and device landscape, we’re doing it through the lens of meeting our users where they are and embracing that landscape. Doing our best, anyway.

If the powers that be can keep chipping away at compatibility problems, that further cements the web as the correct place to build.

I vote for some kind of proper stab at reliable viewport units in 2022, that somehow sensibly handle scrollbars and other browser chrome.

How to Improve CSS Performance

There is no doubt that CSS plays a huge role in web performance. Milica Mihajlija puts a point on exactly why:

When there is CSS available for a page, whether it’s inline or an external stylesheet, the browser delays rendering until the CSS is parsed. This is because pages without CSS are often unusable.

The browser has to wait until the CSS is both downloaded and parsed to show us that first rendering of the page, otherwise browsing the web would be a terribly visually jerky to browse. We’d probably write JavaScript to delay page rendering on purpose if that’s how the native web worked.

So how do you improve it? The classics like caching, minification, and compression help. But also, shipping less of it, and only loading the bit you need and the rest after the first render.

It’s entirely about how and how much CSS you load, and has very little to do with the contents of the the CSS.

Not Your Typical Horizontal Rules

The default browser style for <hr> is so weird. It’s basically:

border-style: inset;
border-width: 1px;

The default border-color is black, but the border doesn’t actually look black, because the inset border “adds a split tone to the line that makes the element appear slightly depressed.”

If I kick up the border-width to 40px you can see it more clearly:

I often reset an <hr> to be “just a line” and it always gets me because I’ll try something, like height: 1px with a background at first, but that’s not right. The easier way to clear it is to turn off all the borders then only use border-top or border-bottom. Or, turn off all the borders, set a height, and use a background.

Annnyway… Sara has some of the nicest horizontal rules in town on the current design of her site, and she’s written it all up. Guess what? They aren’t even <hr> elements! It turns out the only styling hook you have is CSS, which wasn’t as adaptive as Sara needed, so she ended up with a <div role="separator"> (TIL!) and inline SVG.

The best way to get the full flexibility of an SVG is by inlining it. But the <hr> element is content-less — it has no opening and closing tags within which you can place other elements.

The only way to work around the limitations of <hr> while preserving semantics for screen reader users is to use a div and provide the semantics of an hr using ARIA.

Building a Settings Component

This is a tremendous CSS-focused tutorial from Adam Argyle. I really like the “just for gap” concept here. Grid is extremely powerful, but you don’t have to use all its abilities every time you reach for it. Here, Adam reaches for it for very light reasons like using it as an in-between border alternative as well as more generic spacing. I guess he’s putting money where his mouth is in terms of gap superseding margin!

I also really like calling out Una Kravet’s awesome name for flexible grids: RAM. Perhaps you’ve seen the flexible-number-of-columns trick with CSS grid? The bonus trick here (which I first saw from Evan Minto) is to use min(). That way, not only are large layouts covered, but even the very smallest layouts have no hard-coded minimum (like if 100% is smaller than 10ch here):

There is a ton more trickery in the blog post. The “color pops” with :focus-within is fun and clever. So much practical CSS in building something so practical! 🧡 more blog posts like this, please. CSS Is, In Fact, Awesome

You’ve seen the iconic image. Perhaps some of what makes that image so iconic is that people see what they want to see in it. If you see it as a critique of CSS being silly, weird, or confusing, you can see that in the image. If you see it as CSS being powerful and flexible, you’ve got that too. That’s what Jim Neilsen is saying here, reacting to a presentation by Hidde de Vries:

This is the power of CSS. It gives you options. Use them or don’t.

Want it to overflow visibly? It can. Want it to lop off overflowing content? It can. Want it to stretch? It can. Want it to ellipse? It can. Want it to wrap or not wrap? It can. Want to scale the type to fit? It can. If you love CSS, this is probably exactly why.

Mandy Michael has a great thread on this from a few years back:

Brandon Smith wrote about all this a few years back as well. I remain chuffed that Eric Meyer asked the original creator of the image, Steve Frank of Panic, about it and Steve once stopped by to explain the real origin:

It was 2009 and I’d spent what seemed like hours trying to do something in CSS that I already knew I could do in seconds with tables. I was trying really hard to do it with CSS because that’s what you’re supposed to do, but I just wasn’t very good at it (spoiler alert: I’m still not very good at it).

I do have a slightly better grasp on the concept of overflow now, but at the time it just blew my mind that someone thought the default behavior should be to just have the text honk right out of the box, instead of just making the box bigger like my nice, sensible tables had always done.

Anyway, I just had this moment of pure frustration and, instead of solving the problem properly, I spent 5 minutes creating a snarky mug and went back to using tables. Because that’s my signature move in times of crisis.

So, the original is indeed born out of frustration, but has nonetheless inspired many love letters to CSS. It has also certainly earned its place in CSS infamy, right alongside Peter Griffin struggling with window blinds, as one of the most iconic CSS images ever.

Overlay Fact Sheet

I would hope all our web designer/developer spidey senses trigger when the solution to an accessibility problem isn’t “fix the issue” but rather “add extra stuff to the page.” This Overlay Fact Sheet website explains that. An “Overlay” is one of those “add extra stuff to the page” things, ostensibly for improving accessibility. Except, even though marketing may suggest they are a silver bullet to accessibility, they are… not.

The site does a much better job laying that out than I can, so go check it out. As I write, it’s signed by 352 people, mostly people who are accessibility professionals.

How to describe element’s natural sizing behavior

When introducing width and height I explain that by default width takes as much horizontal space as it can, while height takes as little vertical space as possible. This leads to a discussion of these two opposed models that I excerpt below.

My question is: which names do I give to these models?

The three options:

  • inside-out and outside-in
  • context-based and content-based
  • extrinsic and intrinsic size

There is more context in the post.

I definitely don’t like inside-out and outside-in — they make my head spin. I think I’m gonna vote for extrinsic and intrinsic size. I hear those terms thrown around a lot more lately and the fact that they match the specs is something I like. At the same time, I do feel like context-based and content-based are maybe a smidge more clear, but since they are already abstracted and made up, might as well go with the abstracted and made up term that already has legs.

Maps Scroll Wheel Fix

This blog post by Steve Fenton came across my feeds the other day. I’d never heard of HERE maps before, but apparently they are embeddable somehow, like Google Maps. The problem is that you zoom and and out of HERE maps with the scrollwheel. So imagine you’re scrolling down a page, your cursor (or finger) ends up on the HERE map, and now you can’t continue scrolling down the page because that scrolling event is captured by the map and turns into map zooming.

Steve’s solution: put a “coverer” <div> over the map when a scroll event starts on the window, and remove it after a short delay (when scrolling “stops”). That solution resonates with me, as not only have I coded solutions like that in the past for embedded maps, we have a solution like that in place on CodePen today. On CodePen, you can resize the “preview” window, which is an <iframe> of the code you write. If you drag too swiftly, your mouse cursor (or touch event) might trigger movement off of the draggable element, possible onto the <iframe> itself. If that happens, the <iframe> will swallow the event, and the resizing you are trying to do stops working correctly. To prevent this, we put a “covered” <div> over top the <iframe> while you are dragging, and remove it when you stop dragging.

Thinking of maps though, it reminds me Brad Frost’s Adaptive Maps idea documented back in 2012. The idea is that embedding a map on a small screen mobile device just isn’t a good idea. Space is cramped, they can slow down page load, and, like Steve experienced nearly a decade later, they can mess with users scrolling through the page. Brads solution is to serve an image of a map (which can still be API-driven) conditionally for small screens with a “View Map” link that takes them to a full-screen map experience, probably within the map native app itself. Large screens can still have the interactive map, although, I might argue that having the image-that-links-to-map-service might be a smart pattern for any browser with less technical debt.

CSS Border Font

Every letter in this “font” by Davor Suljic is a single div and drawn only with border. That means employing some trickery like border-radius with exotic syntax like border-radius: 100% 100% 0 0 / 37.5% 37.5% 0 0; which rounds just the top of an element with a certain chillness that works here. Plus, using pseudo-elements. I love all the wacky variations with colors, shadows, and border styles, leaning into the limits of CSS.

Drawing things with CSS has long fascinated people. Icons are a popular choice (famously, Nicolas Gallagher’s Pure CSS GUI icons from 2010), since we can draw so many shapes with CSS without even needing to lean on the all-powerful clip-path.

But as Lynn Fisher has taught us, a single div is barely a limitation at all.

Recipe websites, data modeling, and user experience

Simeon Griggs with some nice UX ideas for a recipe website:

  • No math. Swap between units and adjust servings on-the-fly.
  • Offer alternative ingredients.
  • Re-list the ingredient amounts when they’re referenced in the instructions.

I totally agree, especially on that last one:

Of all our improvements I think this is my favourite.

A typical recipe layout contains ingredients with amounts at the start. Then, a bullet point list of instructions to perform the method.

The method though typically does not reference those amounts again, so if you don’t prepare all your amounts ahead of time (which is what you’re probably supposed to do but come on who does that) you’ll have to keep scanning back and forward.

Part of what makes this stuff possible is how you set up the data model. For example, an ingredient might be an Array instead of a String so that you’re set up for offering alternatives right out of the gate.

Barebones CSS for Fluid Images

Zach takes a look at some fundamental HTML+CSS usage for fluid, responsive images. Most of it, I’d say, is what you’d expect, but things get weird when srcset gets involved.

I poked my way through, and in addition to the weird thing Zach noted, wanted to add one more thing. Let’s start like this:

<img src="./img.jpg" alt="" />

With no other CSS involved, this renders at the “intrinsic size” of the image. Say the original image is 400px wide, it renders 400px wide.

We should be putting width and height attributes on images, because it allows the browser to make space for them even before they are downloaded (even when they are fluid, which is super cool). So:

<img src="./img.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="300" />

Also nothing terribly weird there. Even if we slap max-width: 100% in the CSS, that’ll do what we want: preserving space, behave fluidly, and not growing bigger than it should.

But let’s hold off on the max-width: 100% thing for a second. If we just use srcset and set up multiple sources.

BAM, we blow out the width of the thing.

That won’t render at 200px or 400px—it’ll actually render at 100vw, believe it or not. I think that’s because that’s the default sizes value. I normally think of the sizes attribute as not information about anything to do with actual layout, but just information for the browser to choose a source. But that’s not true here. It really does effect layout (in all browsers I tested). Here’s proof:

See the little one below it where all I change is the sizes.

Anyway that’s not what Zach honed in on, but it’s similar. Let’s put back the responsible thing and add in width and height attributes.

No more blowout (with or without sizes) but now we have a new weird problem. This is basically like saying max-width: 200px. Even though we have sources that are wider than 200px, we’ve capped the width at 200px. Zach puts it like:

Using max-width: 100% constrains the image to the container, but be careful when you use this with srcset—it may cap smaller than you want when using [width]! Pair with width: auto to fix this.

Zach’s final snippet is this, which I think reigns in all the weirdness:
